Hi Jim.

Rich knows a lot about timing. As I understand it, the timing marks are in exactly the same places as an 8v GTI engine.

The charger was a bit of a pig to remove on mine, but we never really tried for very long - we gave in, and fitted the engine with the charger on all in one. De-tensioning the belt is easy - the spring tensioner can be clamped down - I've seen it done with a big jubilee clip or similar. Then just remove that to put tension on the belt.

One word of advice would be to change the small charger timing belt - if that snaps it destroys the charger, and is only tiny, and very cheap to replace.
