Saturday the 9 th October saw the hardy souls of the region braving a bright, windy and cold day to attend the Club track event at the Curborough Sprint Circuit (just off the A38 between Burton and Litchfield). We were there in our now familiar role of marshals for the track action and as there were some very nice cars both on and off the track, it’s a shame that the England game kept many visitors away on such a lovely day. Besides the action on the track there was also a multi-class show and shine competition. I’m pleased to report that once again one of our regional members carried off a trophy. Well done to Rob Holt who’s recently lowered MkIII VR6 just gets better each time I see it. It was especially pleasing for Rob as his family were also there to witness his first victory! VW Rescue brought not only a truck (and car) load of second hand parts but also their modified SEAT and several of their track attacking project cars. There was also one hardy soul who brought along a selection of auto jumble to sell. The catering facilities opened at 11:30 to be greeted by a crowd of hungry and thirsty people desperate for a warming cup of tea and some of the excellent freshly prepared food. Despite only stating that they were going to be open for an hour and a half the flood of trade kept them open until they sold out! There were some new faces and cars taking to the testing circuit and my personal favourite – a fully race prepared MkI painted in period 80’s works colours running a 2 litre 16v – took fastest time of the day. It was nice to see a relative rarity in the shape of a Vento VR6 also taking to the track. A great but cold day was had by all and after clearing up and putting the equipment away the hard ‘northern’ lads and lasses of the Derby, Staffs & Leics. region made their way home.
